Research and Extension

The Department has an active research fish farm, where students learn different aspects of aquaculture. Production of tilapia for sale has been modest and students continue to gain a lot of practical experience in pond management, culture operations and marketing of tilapia. This has been a major source of income generation for the Department.

The total pond area is 8,350m2. The ponds are normally fed with spring or rainwater. However, two boreholes have recently been sunk to provide water during the dry season. Owing to the year-round availability of water, the farm undertakes two production cycles annually. The two main species cultured are Oreochromis niloticus (Tilapia) and Clarias gariepinus (catfish). To this end, the Department was adjudged Best Farmer (Aquaculture) in the 2015 National Best Fish Farmer (Pond).
